She Was Never Just Along for the Ride

This was one of those moments that reminded me why we spend so much time outdoors in the first place. What started as a simple mother-daughter turkey hunt turned into one of those days neither of us will ever forget.

A hot, windy Oklahoma afternoon, 86 degrees. We turkey hunt in the same spot we deer hunt, so our cameras are up year-round and showed us the turkeys had crossed the fenceline. I was calling and she was watching. After waiting for a couple hours, Kayleight finally shot her very first turkey. Then came the part she will probably remember forever, throwing that turkey over her shoulder and carrying it nearly a quarter mile back to the truck, blood streaking down her legs while smiling the whole way.

That experience was more than just a successful hunt. It took grit. It built confidence. It was proof that she belongs on the hunt, not just on the sidelines.

Women have always been part of hunting, even if they haven’t always been the ones to pull the trigger.  Scouting trails, setting blinds, checking cameras, filling feeders, learning the land. We just were not always the ones being talked about. That is changing, and it should be.

In my opinion, there’s just something different about a girls’ hunt. No distractions. No pressure. Just time outdoors, learning patience, trusting instincts, and making memories that last a whole lot longer than a season.

From the time my kids were little, I wanted them to understand the outdoors.  Hunting teaches you to read the land, water, cover, food sources, bedding areas, roost trees, and the details most people walk right past. When you spend enough time in the natural world, you start seeing property differently.

I want my kids to trust themselves outdoors and gaining experience hunting builds that. I want them to know they can read the land and whatever is going on in that location, make the call, and handle what comes next. Those lessons matter long after the season ends.

If you are looking for hunting property or recreational acreage in Oklahoma, reach out to our team at America’s Land Partners. We would be glad to help you find that special piece of property to make memories on for years to come.
